Dr. V. Ovidiu Garlea

Lead Instrument Scientist: Powder Diffractometer, HFIR

Education

PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Joseph-Fourier University, in Grenoble, France

Description of Research

Dr. Garlea studies strongly correlated electron systems and quantum magnets using neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering techniques. The research topics he is currently investigating include: orbital degeneracy and the interplay of spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in t2g electron systems (MnV2O4); studies of field-induced condensation of magnons and magnetic ordering in quasi-1D spin gapped systems (IPA-CuCl3, SUL-Cu2Cl4); polarized neutron diffraction and the magnetic excitation spectrum of molecular magnets (F2PNNNO, Fe30, Cr 8); and competing interactions in geometrically frustrated magnets (Delafossites, Spinels).

From 2007 to the present, Dr. Garlea has been the lead instrument scientist at the HB2a Powder Diffractometer in the Neutron Scattering Sciences Division, at ORNL. Prior to the appointment, he was a postdoctoral research associate for five years at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the Center for Neutron Scattering, at ORNL. He previously held postdoctoral and research assistantships at the Synchrotron Light Laboratory, ELETTRA, in Trieste, and the University of Trento, in Italy; Laboratoire de Cristallographie, CNRS, in Grenoble, France; the National Institute for Research and Development for Isotopic and Molecular Technology, at Cluj Napoca, in Romania, and at the Center for Solid State Physics, associated with Babes-Bolyai University, at Cluj Napoca, in Romania
