International Workshop Focuses on How to Speed Up Analysis of Neutron Data

Some 40 attendees from the United States and abroad spent the last days of June at the Spallation Neutron Source at an intensive workshop on the challenges of data analysis and storage for the neutron sciences.

As more neutron instruments come online at SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and at other institutes around the world, and as the capacity of existing instruments continues to grow, the generation of unprecedented amounts of data is becoming a compelling challenge.

Delegates attended from ISIS in the UK; the NIST Center for Neutron Research; Argonne National Laboratory; the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in France; the California Institute of Technology; Tessella, an international technology and consultancy firm; the Science and Technology Facilities Council in the UK; the European Spallation Source; and ORNL.

During the three day workshop, attendees heard presentations on topics including neutron data acquisition and analysis in the 21st century; the MANTID software; the ICAT data catalog system; accelerating data acquisition, reduction, and analysis at SNS; creating data files on the fly; the NOMAD instrument control interface at ILL; and the Center for Accelerating Materials Modeling.

The workshop concluded Saturday with an "Ideas for Collaboration" working lunch.

SNS is currently establishing a new data storage and analysis initiative, headquartered on the fifth floor of Building 8600. Computers at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility will team with SNS and HFIR to perform their neutron data analysis.

The workshop from June 28-30 was organized by the Neutron Sciences Directorate at ORNL; the European Spallation Source in, Lund, Sweden; and the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark.
