SNS Partnerships:
Argonne National Laboratory
Instrumentation
and Experiment Facilities at SNS
Argonne
National Laboratory (ANL)
was primarily responsible for developing
the neutron-scattering instrumentation for
SNS and for working closely with ORNL to
develop the experimental facilities. SNS
will initially have one target station
operating at a frequency of 60 Hertz (Hz).
Two "thermal" moderators
and two "cold" moderators will be used to
service 18 beam lines, where a variety
of instruments are being constructed.
For the experiment facilities, SNS expects
1,000 to 2,000 users each year from all
walks of science and industry. Because not
all of these users will be experts in neutron
scattering, SNS will provide scientists
and technicians to maintain and operate
the instruments and work closely with the
user community.
Users are involved
through regular user meetings and both instrument-specific and general
advisory committees, such as the Experimental Facilities Advisory Committee.
The flexible SNS strategy of including both Instrument Advisory Teams
(for SNS-funded instruments) and Instrument Development Teams (for instruments
funded through means other than SNS) ensures close user involvement
in defining the requirements for instrumentation leading to a diverse
and comprehensive instrument suite.
Final instrumentation will be determined
by the user community through the
SNS Instrument Oversight Committee.
