The diverse applications of neutron scattering research can provide opportunities for studies in practically every scientific and technical field. Neutron scattering allows scientists to count scattered neutrons, measure their energies and the angles at which they scatter, and map their final positions. Such information can reveal the molecular and magnetic structure and behavior of materials, such as high-temperature superconductors, polymers, metals, and biological samples.

The unique capabilities of SNS and HFIR can provide more detailed information about the smallest samples of physical and biological materials than ever before possible. In many cases, the instruments at HIFR and SNS represent improvements in the state of the art. As a result, they allow measurements of greater sensitivity, higher speed, higher resolution, or in more complex sample environments than have been possible at existing neutron facilities.
