The 11th Beam Instrumentation Workshop extends an invitation to join colleagues in addressing design principles and engineering issues of beam diagnostic and control instrumentation for charged particle accelerators and beam transport lines.

Our workshop is intended to promote a forum in which practitioners can exchange ideas and review instrumentation designs and to serve as an introduction to relevant topics for engineers and scientists with the aid of tutorial sessions.

Synopsis

The 11th Beam Instrumentation Workshop will address design principles and engineering issues of beam diagnostic and control instrumentation for charged particle accelerators and beam transport lines. The workshop is intended to promote a forum in which participants can exchange ideas and review instrumentation designs and to serve as an introduction to relevant topics for engineers and scientists with the aid of tutorial sessions.

The workshop will consist of tutorials, invited talks, and contributed oral presentations. There will also be poster displays, vendor displays, and open discussion sessions on topics of interest to attendees. Satellite meeting space can be arranged by contacting Myra Fultz (fultzmj@sns.gov). Proceedings of the workshop will be published.

The workshop meetings will be held at the Knoxville, Tennessee, Marriott Hotel. A computer room and wired/wireless networking will be available for workshop participants.

The workshop organizing committee will present the 2004 Faraday Cup Award (sponsored by Bergoz Inc., France), which is intended to recognize and encourage innovative achievements in accelerator beam instrumentation.

Banquet 

Crescent BendThe BIW04 Banquet will be held on the evening of May 5, 2004 at Crescent Bend (http://www.korrnet.org/cresbend/gallery.html).

Banquet tickets are not included with the registration fee and are $55 for individuals or $100 for a workshop participant with an accompanying guest.


Activities and Events 

The following activities are being offered upon the close of the Beam Instrumentation Workshop. For those who wish to attend either event, you may sign-up and pay at the BIW04 Registration Desk on Sunday evening or Monday morning.

Thursday, May 6, Wild Mountain Tour 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Enjoy a two hour tour of Great Smoky Mountain National Park with a knowledgeable step-on guide; see the lovely wild flowers and perhaps wild animals, for certain you will hear wild stories! For those guests who are interested to get a closer look at the park, we will even have some time for a short hike from the Sugarlands Visitor Center, where you can experience the Smokies in all of their natural splendor. Then visit Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies where you’ll see vicious sharks, gentle stingrays and over 8,000 other exotic sea creatures from around the world. Then enjoy the mountain views and quaint shops as you explore Gatlinburg and have dinner on your own. This tour includes motorcoach transportation, tour guide, and gratuities. The cost is U.S. $56.00 per person; minimum of 30 required.

Poster Instructions

UPDATE: There will be one poster session which will be held on Wednesday, May 5, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. The poster area will be 40 in. high by 40 in. long. Only Velcro dots will be used to mount presentation masters to the panels. Velcro dots will be available at the Workshop for your use. This is a size change from the original web site instructions. The change was necessary due to a required room layout adjustment.

Proceedings 

The proceedings will be published on paper and on-line. (Details are forthcoming.)

Hotel Reservation

A block of rooms will be reserved for attendees at the Knoxville Marriott. If making a reservation by phone, please mention BIW04 to receive the $55.00 per-night rate. If making a reservation on-line, use the group code BIWBIWA to receive the $55.00 rate. Deadline for reservations has been extended to April 15, 2004.

Air and Ground Transportation

For those traveling by air, the arrival destination will be McGhee Tyson Airport (http://www.tys.org/) in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Visa Issues

Conference participants should familiarize themselves with visa requirements well in advance of the conference. The September 11 events have resulted in generally more stringent visa requirements and associated visa processing time.
