Research Reactors Division Director

Brian Weston is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), home to two of the world’s most powerful sources of neutrons for research: the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).  Together, these facilities provide world-class capabilities for neutron scattering, isotope production, materials irradiation, neutron activation analysis, and nuclear physics.

Prior to this role, Brian served as the Director for the Research Reactors Division, responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the High Flux Isotope Reactor.  Brian has been at ORNL since 2007, spending most of that time at HFIR in management roles for Maintenance and Engineering.  He also served in the ORNL Lab Director’s Office for two years as Director for the Office of Integrated Performance Management before returning to HFIR as division director in 2019.  Prior to joining the Laboratory, Brian spent 14 years in engineering and management for tier one automotive manufacturers, including a one-year assignment in Japan.  In addition to his responsibilities at ORNL, he serves on the Board of Managers at Idaho National Laboratory, where he has chaired the Operations Committee since 2018.  Brian holds a BS in Engineering Science from Vanderbilt University.
