Second Target Station Conventional Facilities

The basics

The Second Target Station (STS) Conventional Facilities (CF) will provide the infrastructure necessary to support the project’s proton beam, target, and beamlines for neutron scattering instruments.

How it works

The Spallation Neutron Source site was designed to accommodate expansion of the first target station with a second target station that utilizes the SNS accelerator and infrastructure. The STS project will fulfill the original plan by constructing a proton beam tunnel to the second target, a new target and instrument building, and a new central service building housing power and cooling systems for the second target.

The layout of the planned STS complex.

The STS complex will include 230,000 gross square feet of new construction over 60 acres. This includes an accelerator tunnel, an accelerator service and central utility building, and a target, and instrument building. The conventional facilities team will also be supplying site and utility improvements, cooling systems, plant-wide control systems, waste handling systems, maintenance systems, fire protection systems, and other services required to support the new facilities.

The Architecture Engineering (AE) design services are provided through a contract with Burns & McDonnell. The Construction Manager /General Contractor (CM/CG) is Hensel Phelps.

The CF team will provide the infrastructure necessary for the project to meet the project key performance parameters. The CF team will ensure the safety of all construction personnel, construction proceeds on schedule, within budget, and meets quality requirements.
