Cathy Martin

Cathy Martin worked as the Radiation Protection Manager at ORNL’s High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).  As part of the mission critical team, she supported reactor operations by ensuring radiological conditions were met.  She worked closely with Operations and Maintenance Management integrating procedures for operational and maintenance support at the ORNL campus.

Cathy’s prosperous career can be attributed to her pursuit for knowledge and team-oriented attitude.  Early in her career, Cathy worked for a chemical laboratory for over 25 years.  After retiring from this job, she went back to school to pursue a career in Health Physics.  This opportunity eventually led to a successful profession at ORNL in the Radiation Protection Operations group.  After 20 years of service to the lab, Cathy retired at the end of 2022. Cathy has been recognized as a senior leader and mentor to younger staff in how to conduct safe operations in a challenging and ever-changing environment.
I am most interested in all the miracles of nuclear science.  I have been so blessed to observe medical isotope production beginning with material irradiation through chemical processing inside the hot cell facilities.  All this work is important to both me, and the world, because nuclear science allows better understanding of what we each can have available to have a better world.”
