Kristel Ghoos

Kristel Ghoos is a Neutronics Scientist supporting the Neutron Upgrades Project Office (NUPO) Second Target Station (STS) project. Her primary contribution has been optimizing the dimensions of the target and moderators. She also performs many dose rate and shielding calculations.

Kristel’s colleagues describe her as a creative and proactive researcher with a humble demeanor who sets a positive example for her entire group.

Kristel joined the STS project after earning her PhD from the University of Leuven, Belgium, where she studied Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. Initially, her university research involved optimizing simulation strategies in multi-physics code systems. However, her career focus shifted to neutronics due to her profound fascination with nuclear applications. She credits her excellent mentors, supervisors, and colleagues with helping her become a better scientist by providing continuous guidance and advice.

In addition to her scientific contributions, Kristel is active in social and academic pursuits within NUPO and NScD, including Women in Neutron Sciences (WiNS) and the Friday Forum committee. Her efforts play a vital role in fostering a sense of community among colleagues.

Outside of work, Kristel loves being active outdoors, including running, hiking, and backpacking. The Smoky Mountains are her favorite place to unwind. She also plays the clarinet in the Oak Ridge Community Band.

A big part of my job is basically solving puzzles. It is rewarding to be part of a big project that will enable many scientific discoveries and to work at a world-class facility with a rich history.

I think it is important to always keep learning. There are continuously new tools, methods and insights that can improve the work that we are doing.”
