Field-temperature phase diagram for Nd. Filled circles indicate phase boundaries determined from this study. SANS diffraction patterns for phases VI, IV, and II, alongside the Nd double hexagonal closed packed structure are shown in the inset.

Scientific Achievement

The discovery of new magnetic Bragg peaks in elemental Nd reveals spin textures with nanoscale modulations and highlights the emergence of large-scale spin structures from localized moment-conduction electron interactions.

Significance and Impact

Advancing understanding of the interactions between localized magnetic moments and conduction electrons yields insights into spin texture formation relevant to advanced applications such as spintronics.

Research Details

  • Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) performed at GP-SANS at HFIR  and at NG3 at NCNR revealed new magnetic Bragg peaks that correspond to nanoscale spin textures.
