Ti doping enhances performance of high Ni cathodes
Scientific Achievement
It is established that Ti doping of high Ni cathodes such as LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 produces a disordered layered structure at the particle surfaces with enhanced exchange of Li+ and Ni2+. This leads to corrosion resistance and enhanced electrochemical performance.
Significance and Impact
The method of Ti-doping described in this study can lead to Li ion batteries with extended life and much improved performance.
Research Details
- The structure of Ti substituted LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 has been determined using neutron diffraction (ND).
- TEM verified the presence of the disordered layer on particle surfaces.
- ab inito calculations using ND results showed the structure to be stable on particle surfaces.
- Coin cells were used to verify the electrochemical
