Neutron scattering grew from the nuclear science of the Manhattan Project during the 1940s at what is now Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Source.
The original letter Ernest Wollan wrote in 1944 to Richard Doan, director of research at Clinton Laboratories (today’s ORNL), requesting funding for neutron experiments at the X-10 pile.
